WhatsApp, the instant messaging leader, with 1.5 billion active users, has been testing different new features recently. For example, WhatsApp Payments in India, Delete for Everyone option etc.

Recently, the Facebook own instant messenger giant, WhatsApp has registered a new domain called wa.me for domain short linking purpose, which redirects users to its api url (api.whatsapp.com). This url is probably meant to make a shareable link using which, an user can directly open a chat window with a specific user without searching the name in the app.

How does this WhatsApp feature work?

Whatsapp (wa.me)

Users need to type https://wa.me/(phone number) of the person they want to drop the text to. They will automatically be directed to the chat. Example if your friends or family members phone number is +91-9876543210 then type https://wa.me/919876543210.

Invalid Url

If you try to open a chat with an incorrect phone number, the instant messaging app will notify you as ‘phone number shared via url is invalid’. We can predict, the app developers are planning to add a Url invite to chat option in the upcoming builds.
