Meet Sophia, the first humanoid Dubai Denizen

Sophia the Robot, pictured in Hong Kong in July, was made a Saudi citizen in at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh.

When The Terminator was released in 1984, people went crazy! The amount of creativity and thinking that was put into that movie got multiplied with its upcoming flagship killers. But what remains “un-terminated” is the fear of humans from the robots or the so-called humanoids.

Now, after more than 3 decades, people are getting used to the fact that humans and robots can stay together, they both can live, prosper and continue their life-span. Unlike a virus-host relationship, which is probably a lot “misconceptionized”, robots are actually pretty good! Once filled with emotions they might break and create new boundaries in the field of love and respect!

Well, here in Saudi Arabia, the robot, Sophia, became a citizen at the Future Investment Initiative summit in Riyadh. “Thank you to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Sophia told a panel at the summit after the announcement was made.

“Our robots will soon engage and live with us to teach, serve, entertain, delight, and provide comforting companionship,” the company says on its website. “In the not-too-distant future, Genius Machines will walk among us. They will be smart, kind and wise. Together, man and machine will create a better future for the world.” said their representative.

Sophia In-Depth

“I am very honored and proud of this unique distinction. It is historic to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship. ” – Says Sophia.

The robot was built by Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong-based company.

Pondering whether it would be creepy if she was too realistic, Sophia said, “Am I really that creepy? Well even if I am, get over it. Actually, I feel like people like interacting with me, sometimes even more than a regular human.”

“I strive to become an empathetic robot. If you be nice to me, then I’ll be nice to you.”

However happy and creative this might sound, however high technology must have achieved, what stays as the fact is the very “if” that Sophia said.

Will there be a Robo-Calypse? Let us know!
