With the tag “Rethink Possibilities”, Huawei launched its all-new Huawei Mate 30 Pro with some interesting specs. Few of them are Horizon Display, SuperSensing Cine Camera, Gesture Control and many more.
The launch of the device came during a very controversial phase. We know that the U.S. had blacklisted Huawei. As a result, they cannot perform any trade and business with American companies. This includes Google.
Was Huawei able to do something to strengthen its software set of things or are they just dependent on Hardware? Will anyone be interested in buying an Android phone without Google Play Services?
Now the phone is out, let’s dig deeper into the device.
Cut to the Chase
- Huawei unveils the Mate 30 series in Munich
- No Headphone jack for the Pro
- Alternative for Google Play Services
- Super Slow-Motion: 7680fps at 720p
Built and Display
On looking at the device, you can’t stop admiring its looks and design.
The most noticeable feature of this device is the new waterfall display. Huawei calls it a ‘Horizon’ Display. It is having a 6.53 inches of curved OLED display with a curvature of 88 degrees. It comes with a 60Hz refresh rate. This display gives you an actual bezel-less experience. The ultra-curved screen edges gives a good grip to hold.
At the top of the display, you will find a notch that houses a Selfie Camera, Ambient Light & Proximity Sensor, a 3D Depth Camera and also a Gesture sensor.
On the edges, you will be having invisible buttons. This time no physical buttons are added in the device. It has been replaced with side touch interaction. The phone is also having Sound-on-Display technology. The speakers are in front of the device which is kept hidden behind the display.
At the bottom, you are having a USB-C and a speaker grill. The device is also having an in-display fingerprint sensor. The device is IP68 rated.
You will also be getting superb camera modules. This time Huawei has gone with the ‘Halo Ring Design’ which is having a total of four cameras with Leica Optics.
After Vivo and Samsung, Huawei has implemented this in their smartphones. It helps in getting a better screen-to-body ratio along with a truly bezel-less experience. What makes it unique is the almost 90 degrees of curvature.
With the coming of this display, we don’t have space for physical buttons on the side. As a result, we have got the side touch interaction. With the help of this, you can slide your fingers up and down to adjust the volume. To access these virtual volume rockers, you need to simply double-tap either of the sides. This new innovation is something that everyone will love to try. But the question arises, how many will be agreeing to adjust with it?
Power within the Device – Processor
The Huawei Mate 30 Pro comes with the beast. It houses the Kirin 990 processor which was recently launched in IFA on 6th September. It’s an Octa-core processor with Dual NPU. It is having improved processing power, improved graphics and an additional NPU core for low power AI tasks. It is having an integrated 5G modem with it.
At the launch, the device was claimed to reach 1.5GB/S speed with 5G connectivity. Kirin 980 showed a convincing performance and the hopes are high with 990 too.
This time Huawei has gone with the hardware-based face unlock. So we can say that the face unlock will be more secure and accurate. But the thing is, when it’s on the desk, many of us won’t actually pick it up to unlock. So for this, you can unlock the phone by your fingerprint. The device is having an In-Display Fingerprint Scanner, which will be more versatile. You are also getting App Lock. It will help your privacy and property to be protected at App-Level.
By bundling a Gesture Sensor within the notch, now you can control your device with your hand. While watching videos, you can replace the gyroscope for a while with the AI auto-rotate. How? Check this out…
Android Phone without Google Play Services
Huawei Mate 30 Series comes with EMUI 10 on top of Android 10. It is still an android based phone. As the device isn’t having the Play Store and its App, the company has gone with Huawei AppGallery. The company has announced that the Mate 30 Series will be shipped with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) core. It is already integrated with more than 45,000 apps.
The company has invested $1 billion into its software ecosystem. Now when the devices are out in the market, we have to see how this will actually work.

3D Depth Sensing Camera
This sensor will help in getting the Bokeh Effects to the images and videos which you shoot.
Both the 40MP Camera is a bigger 1/1.54-inch sensor. It is also having an RYYB sensor which allows 40% more light to enter. In addition, cameras are also having Autofocus and AIS present in it. The device can shoot videos: 4K at 30/60fps, 1080p at 30/60/960fps, 720p at 7680fps.
We will be getting a mammoth 4,500mAh battery with this device. With the P30 series, we saw that the device could survive a full day with a little juice left in it. With an increased battery capacity, it could give a tough fight to the iPhone 11.
The device supports the 40W fast, which can actually charge from 0% to 70% in just 30 minutes. The device also supports 27W wireless charging along with reverse wireless charging available.
Prices and Variants
If we take a look at the colors, the device comes with a total of 6 color options. Two of them are special Vegan-Leather Edition: Green and Forest Orange. Other colors include Space Silver, Emerald Green, Cosmic Purple, and Black.
