The CEO Richard Yu has confirmed that the Mate 20 series will launch in October. The Kirin 980 will be powering the machine. This means the beast will have something great under the hood. Being the world’s first commercially available 7nm chipset. Now, the mobile companies are more focused on the processor and also we can say it become tough competition for other companies.

Kirin SoC

Overview

The new Kirin 980 chipset not only be 20% faster but also 40% more efficient than the comparatively Kirin 970. It will reportedly have processor cores that peak at 2.8GHz for the four powerful Cortex-A77 cores.

The chip will be among the first to be built on TSMC’s 7nm process. The earlier rumors also suggested it will adopt latest AI chip technology by Cambricorn that is expected to make the NPU even smoother. Hence it will bring up to 5 trillion calculations per watt. It will be 1.5 times faster than the Adreno 630 that is currently pairing with Snapdragon 845 by Qualcomm.

The news comes at a point when there are already a bunch of rumors regarding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset. A report has claimed that instead of TMSC, Samsung will be manufacturing the next Snapdragon 855, through their 7nm fabrication process. Samsung is already done with its work on the 7nm fabrication process a whole six months ahead of schedule. With a great set of brains, this is pretty great on their side. This means that the team has moved on to work on the 5nm fabrication process.

  • The Kirin 980 2.8 GHz 4x Cortex-A77 + 4x Cortex-A55
  • Next being, Kirin 970 2.4 GHz + 1.8 GHz 4x Cortex-A73 + 4x Cortex-A53
  • Finally, Kirin 710 2.2 GHz + 1.8 GHz 4x Cortex A73 + 4x Cortex-A53

Wrap Up Kirin

Meanwhile, it may be a little doubt on the first phone that will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Still, from an educated guess, Huawei has confirmed that it will launch the Huawei Mate 20 series with Kirin 980 SoC in October. Huawei Mate 20 will be sporting a 6.3-inch AMOLED panel and the Mate 20 Pro is to feature a massive 6.9-inch display.

The first phones to arrive with the Kirin 980 should be Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro.  They will be available to consumers in the last quarter of the year, most probably.
